Senator Hassan, Mayor Craig, and Granite State Seniors Sound the Alarm on Don Bolduc’s Extreme Attacks on Social Security and Medicare

Monday, September 26, 2022

Senator Maggie Hassan joined Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig and Granite State seniors at the William B. Cashin Senior Activity Center in Manchester this morning to discuss Don Bolduc’s disastrous plans to eliminate Social Security and end Medicare as we know it.

Just last week, Bolduc doubled down on his extreme position, saying that Social Security has “been there since 1935, it’s time for change.” Politico also reported that last month, Bolduc promised to end Medicare as we know it. Bolduc has also promised to ensure that “we no longer have Social Security.”

“While I am fighting to lower costs for seniors, my opponent, Don Bolduc, supports dismantling their health care,” said Senator Maggie Hassan. “If Don Bolduc had his way, our country would be a place where seniors are left to fend for themselves; where our parents and grandparents don’t get the care that they need; where more families are burdened with medical debt; and where Americans are robbed of their Social Security. I am running to protect and strengthen Medicare and Social Security because our country must be a place where our seniors are always cared for and where our government keeps its promises.”

“Don Bolduc would vote to end Medicare and Social Security as we know it. Don Bolduc has said he supports privatizing Medicare, which would leave thousands of Queen City seniors without affordable health care,” said Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig. “The choice in this election is clear; Senator Hassan stands up for seniors and Don Bolduc would do everything he could to take away their Medicare and their Social Security. The Queen City — and all Granite Staters — need a leader who will do right by our seniors and fight for them, and that is why we need to re-elect Senator Hassan.”

“My husband suffered with Alzheimer’s for nearly 12 years. Not only was it a heartbreaking process, but it was also really expensive and drained our finances. Social Security is now my primary source of income. I depend on that to get by,” said Concord resident Laurel Keefe. “Don Bolduc has made clear he would end Social Security and Medicare as we know it. Frankly, this is cruel. I’ve paid into these programs my entire working life. It’s clear he doesn’t understand the experience of so many people like me in New Hampshire. But I trust Senator Hassan, who has always stood with seniors. She has consistently worked to preserve and strengthen Medicare and Social Security, which over 300,000 Granite Staters like myself rely on.”

“I’m grateful for Senator Hassan’s longtime commitment to supporting seniors and ensuring they have access to the benefits they’ve earned over their lifetime, such as Social Security and Medicare. She has been a champion for seniors — taking on Big Pharma to bring down the cost of our prescription drugs and out-of-pocket costs. She has always stood with the seniors and fought tooth and nail to deliver for us. There are those running for office this year who are dangerous for Granite State citizens and should not be running to represent us,” said former Rep. Joan Schulze. “This November Medicare and Social Security are being carefully scrutinized. Maggie Hassan is the clear choice and champion to bring these programs to a positive continuation.”

In addition to his promise that “we no longer have Social Security,” Bolduc backed cutting “$2 trillion from Social Security.” He has said that Social Security was “for a different time, for a different place.” and is “bankrupting” the country. Bolduc has also endorsed a scheme to raise the retirement age, slash the Cost-of-Living Adjustment — and cut $1.2 trillion from Medicare. He also opposed allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices, which would lower costs for seniors.
