Monday, August 15, 2022

Manchester, NH – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan delivered powerful remarks and answered audience questions at the World Affairs Council in Manchester tonight, where she discussed her efforts to ensure that America remains safe, secure, and free. In her remarks, Senator Hassan discussed the global challenges of today – including the importance of combating the threat that authoritarian regimes, including China and Russia, pose to the United States and democracies around the world.

“I am speaking to you tonight during a consequential moment in our country — and world’s — history,” Senator Hassan said. “With ongoing aggression from Russia and China and evolving threats ranging from terrorism to cybersecurity to climate change and more — American leadership is more essential than ever.”

As a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Senator Hassan is working to strengthen national security and ensure that the United States can combat aggression from foreign adversaries such as China and Russia.

To address the rise of China, Senator Hassan worked with Republicans to help pass the bipartisan competition and innovation bill, which is now law, to help the United States outcompete countries like China. The bill invests in semiconductor manufacturing in America, addresses supply chains challenges, lowers costs, and strengthens national security. The Senator also worked with a Republican to write and pass legislation to ensure that America’s armed forces – not China’s – remain the world leader in quantum technology.

Following Russia’s unconscionable invasion of Ukraine, Senator Hassan worked across the aisle to provide critical military assistance to support Ukraine, and successfully led bipartisan efforts to close a loophole that allowed Russia to sell off its gold reserves.
