Senator Hassan is leading the fight to protect reproductive freedom.
In a speech at EMILY’s List’s national conference and in interviews yesterday with local and national media — including WMUR, NECN, WBZ Boston, NH Today, The Pulse of NH, the Associated Press, WCAX, and WKBK — Senator Hassan spoke out against the Supreme Court’s draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In the interviews, Senator Hassan said the court’s decision is “very, very disturbing,” and that “if a woman can’t be trusted to determine what’s best for her own health, and her family and her future, then women are not living in full freedom and they’re not being included as full and equal citizens in our democracy.”

Associated Press: Sudden Abortion Focus Shakes Midterm Election Landscape

From New Hampshire, Hassan said the leaked opinion clarifies the stakes this fall for voters in her state and beyond. She called a potential Roe reversal “devastating to women all across New Hampshire, all across the country and for all people who really believe in our individual freedoms.”
-
An abortion focus would also offer a sharp contrast with her Republican opponents, whom she described as “extremists” on abortion.
-
“This is really a difficult day for Granite State women, American women,” Hassan said.

Senator Hassan at EMILY’s List National Conference on May 3: “On the ballot will be a woman’s fundamental right to be a full and equal citizen in our democracy.”
-
Sen. Hassan: “On the ballot will be a woman’s fundamental right to be a full and equal citizen in our democracy. This is a fight not just to defend reproductive health care — but a woman’s right to control her own destiny. And it’s a fight we must win.”
-
Sen. Hassan: “The Republican men — and yes they are all men — running against me are all pushing an extreme, anti-choice agenda. If elected to the Senate, they would ban abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest. They would defund Planned Parenthood. They would vote for Justices who will take away the constitutional rights of American women. And anti-abortion activists are already plotting a push for a national ban on abortion — and my opponents would be right there with them. That is their agenda. But I have taken on anti-choice opponents before and won — and together we will do it again.

Sen. Hassan: “The fundamental premise of our constitution is that each and every one of us should live with full liberty and freedom.” […]
-
WBZ: “She is pushing for the Women’s Health Protection Act to be passed by Congress.”
-
Sen. Hassan: “Justices can parse this any way they want, but at the end of the day, if a woman can’t be trusted to make her own health care decisions, if a woman can’t be trusted to determine what’s best for her own health, and her family and her future, then women are not living in full freedom and they’re not being included as full and equal citizens in our democracy.”
-
Sen. Hassan: “Well it’s a devastating day for Granite State women and American women.”
-
NECN: “NH Senator Maggie Hassan says that the leaked draft opinion indicating that the Supreme Court can strike down Roe v. Wade underscored the need to codify access to abortion into law.”

Sen. Hassan: “It means that we have to renew our efforts in Congress to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act which would codify Roe v. Wade across the country and make sure that women have access to this critical care when and where they need it.”

Boston 25: Senator Maggie Hassan Says “The Unconfirmed SCOTUS Opinion Would Be Devastating For Women’s Freedom.”
-
Senator Hassan: “The unconfirmed SCOTUS opinion would be devastating for women’s freedom. With a woman’s right to live as a free and equal citizen under attack, Congress needs to codify Roe v. Wade now more than ever.”
Senator Hassan on NH Today with Chris Ryan: “What I do know is that men and women across New Hampshire, men and women across this country, believe that people should have the right to control what happens to their own bodies and to live with autonomy and liberty. That is fundamentally what it means to be an American. And I will continue to fight for the full inclusion of women in our society, and that starts with them being able to make their own health care decisions and decide if and when to have a family.”
Senator Hassan on Good Morning NH with Jack Heath: “This is about whether women have the right in democracy to make their own decisions about their health care, about if and when to have a family, about what kind of future they want to have and they want their families to have. And so this is about a fundamental right. And it is really concerning if this is, in fact, the decision of the court. And it’s a decision that stands. This overturns Roe v. Wade. It overturns the Casey case as well. And it will be a very scary and difficult time for women who confront an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy.”
Senator Hassan on Open Mic with Dan Mitchell: “The notion that the court would completely overturn Roe v. Wade and the Casey decision is extraordinary. And it is going to pose, if it holds, real difficulties for women who face an unplanned pregnancy. This is a really, really difficult time for America’s women if this case holds. And it also means that we have to do everything we can to get the legislation we have in Congress that would codify Roe v. Wade passed.”
