ROUNDUP: Bolduc Criticized for Telling Women to “Get Over” a National Abortion Ban

Tuesday, September 20, 2022

In case you missed it, WMUR, POLITICO Playbook, Washington Post, HuffPost and Jezebel this morning covered Don Bolduc’s comments yesterday to WMUR, where he told women who are outraged over the threat of a nationwide abortion ban to “get over it.” Playbook was the first to report on Maggie for NH’s new digital ad “Won’t Get Over It,” and called Bolduc’s comments “one way not to pivot” while Jezebel noted that Bolduc has “a fraught relationship with the truth.”

Read the coverage below:

WMUR: Republican U.S. Senate candidate Don Bolduc on Sen. Maggie Hassan’s abortion focus: ‘Get over it’

  • “She just wants to hang on with dear life. Well, guess what? Your views are not consistent with the average Granite Stater, number one. Number two, get over it. This is about the economy, fiscal responsibility and the safety and security of this nation, which you cannot defend,” Bolduc said.

  • In a recent poll from the St. Anselm College Survey Center of nearly 2,000 registered voters in New Hampshire, 71% identified as pro-choice, 25% described themselves as pro-life and 3% were unsure. When it comes to the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of the Roe vs. Wade decision, 38% said they support the ruling, 58% oppose it and 5% are unsure.

  • Hassan has campaigned on the notion that the right to abortion is in jeopardy in all 50 states if Republicans gain control of Congress. […]

  • The Hassan campaign released a digital ad on Monday that focuses on Bolduc’s “get over it” comment.

Politico Playbook: One way not to pivot

  • New Hampshire GOP Senate nominee DON BOLDUC on Democratic Sen. MAGGIE HASSAN’s focus on abortion rights: “She just wants to hang on with dear life. Well guess what? Your views are not consistent with the average Granite Stater, number one. Number two, get over it. This is about the economy.”

  • Right on cue, Hassan’s campaign launched a new digital ad, “Won’t Get Over It,” hitting Bolduc for the comment. Watch the spot

Washington Post: In N.H., Hassan seizes on Bolduc comments, tries to keep focus on abortion issue

  • In the New Hampshire Senate race, incumbent Sen. Maggie Hassan (D) is seeking to keep the focus on abortion, with the release of a new digital ad Monday that seizes on comments made by Republican nominee Don Bolduc in a television interview that aired Sunday.

  • Hassan’s campaign seized on the “get over it” phrasing for its new ad. In the spot, a female narrator says: “After Roe was overturned, Don Bolduc told us to ‘rejoice.’ Now when faced with a nationwide abortion ban, he says. …” The ad then cuts to footage from the interview with Bolduc saying, “Get over it.” “We are not getting over it,” the narrator concludes.

HuffPost: New Hampshire GOP Senate Nominee Don Bolduc On Abortion: ‘Get Over It’

  • “Well, guess what? Your views are not consistent with the average Granite Stater, number one. Number two, get over it…”

  • The right-wing candidate was not the preferred choice of establishment Republicans to take on Hassan. He holds a wide variety of extreme beliefs: He wants to eliminate both the FBI and the Department of Education, backed former President Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 election and called GOP Gov. Chris Sununu a “Chinese Communist sympathizer.”

  • Hassan’s campaign responded on Monday with a digital ad that highlighted Buldoc’s comments urging people to “rejoice” after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade earlier this year.

  • “Don Bolduc thinks New Hampshire women should just ‘get over’ an attack on our fundamental freedoms,” Hassan spokesperson Sydney Petersen said in a statement. “We’re not going to get over it — but we are already over Don Bolduc. Whether it’s calling for people to ‘rejoice’ after Roe was overturned or telling Granite Staters to ‘get over’ a nationwide abortion ban, Don Bolduc could not be more out of touch with Granite Staters.”

Jezebel: Republican Senate Nominee on Abortion: ‘Get Over It’

  • Bolduc, like many Republicans, has a fraught relationship with the truth: This is the same man who repeatedly said during his primary campaign that Donald Trump won the 2020 election—only to change his position less than two days after winning his primary, saying that President Joe Biden did, in fact, win that election.

  • In the interview, Bolduc appears to accuse his Democratic opponent, Sen. Maggie Hassan, of fearmongering about a national abortion ban, telling her to “get over it.”

  • Hassan responded on Sunday, saying of an abortion ban, “women will not ‘get over it.’”

  • Bolduc may want to rethink his talking points here, given that abortion rights are the single issue most likely to make people vote this November.
