#NHSen Takeaways: NH Businesses Cheer Passage of Sen. Hassan’s Bipartisan Innovation and Competition Bill That Is Opposed by All Her Opponents

Saturday, August 6, 2022

This week, all of the Republican Senate candidates came out against bipartisan legislation developed by Senator Maggie Hassan and strongly supported by New Hampshire businesses that will help the United States outcompete China, lower costs, and strengthen our national security. While her opponents stand against bipartisan legislation to boost American manufacturing, Senator Hassan keeps delivering for New Hampshire — and this week she successfully worked to pass bipartisan legislation to expand health care for veterans exposed to toxic substances.

Republican Candidates Come out Against Hassan’s Bipartisan Innovation and Competition Bill Despite Support from NH Businesses

Union Leader: Hassan celebrates, all GOP foes pan China competition reform bill

  • U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan on Monday celebrated a bill on President Joe Biden’s desk that will ramp up America’s technology competition with China, while all of her major Republican opponents condemned her role in the legislation.

  • In addition to spending $52 billion on the incentives to build more semiconductors, Hassan pointed to other programs popular with New Hampshire companies that will receive more money under the bill. These include the Manufacturing Extension Partnership in New Hampshire and Manufacturing USA, which includes Manchester’s Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI), the New Hampshire EPSCoR program that funds research and education at New Hampshire universities.

  • Minim Chief Executive Officer Gray Chynoweth attended a roundtable Hassan hosted on the topic last winter at Cirtronics Corp. in Milford. “The successful passage of Senator Hassan’s bill through the Senate marks a major victory not only for businesses and manufacturers based in the Granite State, but those across the country as well,” said Chynoweth, a former Democratic nominee for Executive Council.

Senator Hassan on WMUR’s Close Up: Don Bolduc and Kevin Smith “Oppose a Bill that is Critical to Our National Security”

  • Senator Hassan: “Think about what just happened this week in Washington. In the Senate, we passed a bipartisan bill to outcompete China and to strengthen our national security. And it was a bipartisan bill… yet my opponents, Kevin Smith and Don Bolduc, have said that they oppose a bill that is critical to our national security and to our capacity to maintain our competitive edge and lead economically worldwide. That really says all you need to know.”

Senator Hassan Delivers for Veterans Exposed to Toxic Burn Pits

WMUR on Senate Passing Senator Hassan’s Bipartisan Legislation to Expand Critical Health Care for Veterans Exposed to Toxic Burn Pits

  • WMUR Anchor: “A bill enhancing health care and disability benefits for veterans is heading to the President’s desk. New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan helped introduce the PACT Act more than a year ago. It hopes to help veterans who served near burn pits in Afghanistan and Iraq. Those fires released toxic chemicals officials say may have led to cancer or other illnesses. As a result the bill directs the VA to cover disability payments and treatments for veterans without requiring them to provide evidence. Previously the VA rejected about 70% of the claims.”

Senator Hassan Continues to Call Out Opponents for Their Anti-Choice Records

Senator Hassan on WMUR’s Close Up: My Opponents Would “Be Yes Votes for a National Abortion Ban”

  • Senator Hassan: “This is about the fundamental right of half of the citizens of the United States of America. This is about whether women are included as full and equal citizens, whether they are able to make their own health care decisions. […] And when you look at my opponents, Chuck Morse was the architect of the first abortion ban in modern New Hampshire history and has repeatedly voted against exceptions to that abortion ban that most Granite Staters would support. Don Bolduc says the decision didn’t go far enough. Kevin Smith has called for ending abortion for all time. They all would be yes votes for a national abortion ban. […] The government has no role to play here.”
