Mitch McConnell’s Push for a National Abortion Ban “Roils US Senate Race In New Hampshire”

Tuesday, May 10, 2022

Senator Hassan is continuing to “sound the alarm” over her opponents’ support for criminalizing abortion, emphasizing to national and local media that her opponents would be a yes vote for Mitch McConnell’s nationwide abortion ban.

In a powerful interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Senator Hassan said all her opponents “are eager to come to Washington and help Mitch McConnell fulfill what has clearly been his goal for decades, which is to not only overturn Roe v Wade, but now it seems, pass a national abortion ban.” Earlier in the day, Senator Hassan joined the New Hampshire Congressional Delegation at Planned Parenthood of New England, saying  “we are going to continue to stand up for the freedom of each and every woman in New Hampshire and across the country.” And she spoke directly with WMUR and WCAX about how — with McConnell putting a nationwide abortion ban on the table — the stakes at the ballot box continue to rise.

Senator Maggie Hassan to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow

  • MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow: The fight over abortion will be nationwide this year, given what the Supreme Court is about to do on Roe versus Wade. But that fight will not just be a fight between conservatives on the one side and fire breathing progressives on the other. Senator Maggie Hassan is a moderate. She is a workhorse senator who is known for being fiercely bipartisan. She’s a legitimate centrist in a world where that is not supposed to be possible anymore. Last week, Georgetown University’s School of Public Policy literally ranked her the most bipartisan senator in the United States Senate. But this fight is joined, including by senators like Maggie Hassan.

  • Senator Maggie Hassan: In New Hampshire, we have a strong bipartisan tradition of supporting a woman’s right to make her own fundamental health care decisions. Her right, essentially to freedom. And so it is very, very concerning that extremists in our state capital have inserted an abortion ban into our state budget last year. And now, one of them is one of my opponents in the Senate race. The Republicans are eager to come to Washington and help Mitch McConnell fulfill what has clearly been his goal for decades, which is to not only overturn Roe v Wade, but now it seems, pass an abortion ban, a national abortion ban. This is an issue where the vast majority of Americans across party lines support Roe v Wade and support codifying it.

  • Senator Hassan: This is about a fundamental right protecting our freedom and recognizing that if the Republican Party is willing to go after a woman’s fundamental freedom, if they are willing to roll back the rights of half of the population, will they be willing to stand up for anyone’s freedom? And what that does to our democracy is of critical concern to my constituents and I think Americans everywhere.

WMUR: Pending Supreme Court Case On Abortion Roils US Senate Race In New Hampshire

“Hassan and the rest of the state’s all-Democratic congressional delegation held a news conference Monday to sound the alarm on the issue of abortion. […] Hassan said some may think of abortion as just a health care issue, but she said for women, it’s more than that. ‘The idea that a woman’s right to decide if and when to have a family and to control their own future isn’t an economic issue is absurd.’”

WCAX: Political Watchers: Abortion Will Drive New Hampshire Voters to Polls

“Abortion rights are once again front and center in the Granite State. It’s an issue that will likely play a factor in the upcoming midterm elections. […] ‘Granite Staters all across New Hampshire had been expressing their outrage at the idea that politicians could take control of women’s decision-making,’ said Hassan.”

Union Leader: New Hampshire’s federal delegation vows to fight for abortion rights

The state’s all-Democratic congressional delegation vows to keep working to defend a woman’s reproductive freedom even as the U.S. Supreme Court is on the verge of overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. […] “I know we are going to continue to stand up for the freedom of each and every woman in New Hampshire and across the country,” said Sen. Maggie Hassan Monday during a press conference at the Concord headquarters of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.
