Within hours of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe, Republicans from Mike Pence to Kevin McCarthy called for a national abortion ban — something Mitch McConnell has proposed repeatedly for years. That push for a nationwide ban is now front and center in the New Hampshire Senate race: according to a long-time New Hampshire political reporter, “with Republican politicians already calling for a national ban on abortion the issue will be central.”
In the immediate aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe, Senator Maggie Hassan is making clear that her opponents would be “yes” votes for Mitch McConnell’s push to ban abortion nationwide. Just hours after the ruling, Senator Hassan rallied with Granite Staters and joined WMUR, NBC Boston and Boston 25 to lay out the grave danger her opponents pose to the fundamental rights of women in New Hampshire and across the country.

Senator Hassan Is Standing Up Against Mitch McConnell’s National Abortion Ban:
InDepthNH: With Republican politicians already calling for a national ban on abortion the issue will be central to the federal races as well. The US Senate race will pit pro-abortion advocate incumbent Democrat Maggie Hassan against whoever the Republican nominee, all decidedly anti-abortion candidates from Senate President Chuck Morse to former Cornerstone Action executive director Kevin Smith.
Union Leader: Sen. Maggie Hassan warned that Republican leaders in Congress want to impose national restrictions on abortion. “Make no mistake, the end of Roe is not the ultimate goal of anti-choice extremists: Mitch McConnell has made it clear that the ultimate objective is to ban abortion nationwide,” Hassan said. “Our most important objective must be to hold the line against any efforts to enact a nationwide ban that would send a woman and her doctor to jail for having an abortion.”
Politico: Massachusetts Playbook: In New Hampshire, vulnerable Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan is using Roe to galvanize her supporters and attack her Republican rivals, who were touting their “pro-life” records in the wake of the decision.
WMUR:
-
Senator Hassan: “I am outraged and really saddened by the Supreme Court’s decision here. It takes away a woman’s fundamental freedom and it’s taking American women and our whole country back to a time when women were second class citizens.”
-
Senator Hassan: “This decision today, the Dobbs decision, has taken away a woman’s fundamental right to use her own judgment to make the most personal and complex and gut-wrenching decisions about her life.”
-
Senator Hassan: “What we hear from Republicans in New Hampshire is that they want to impose further restrictions on a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions.”
Seacoast Current: Sen. Maggie Hassan said that her grandmother got the right to vote, her mother saw women get to make their own reproductive choices, and she was the second woman in history to be elected both a governor and a senator. “We can’t go backwards. We can’t let this decision, which is leaving my daughter today with fewer rights than I had, be the final say on a woman’s freedom. That’s not the trajectory of the United States, it’s not the trajectory of the Granite State.”
Fox News: Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, who’s being targeted by Republicans as she faces a challenging reelection in a crucial swing state in November’s midterm elections, stressed that “the danger now facing women and our country is real and it is grave. In denying a woman the right to make her own decisions free from the interference of politicians, the Supreme Court has sent us back 50 years,” the senator emphasized.
