“The specter of a national abortion ban” remains a “key issue for voters” ahead of the November elections – as leading New Hampshire media outlets are reporting.
On Wednesday, Senator Hassan joined medical providers and reproductive rights advocates — where she talked about the threat of a McConnell nationwide abortion ban and her commitment to standing up for a woman’s fundamental freedom. The Union Leader highlighted Senator Hassan’s visit and reported that she “unleash[ed] the strongest attack yet against her Republican rivals on the issue.” And in covering Senator Hassan’s remarks, the Concord Monitor noted that, “poll after poll in New Hampshire and across the country has indicated a surge in importance around the issue of abortion in the wake of the high court’s monumental ruling.”

Concord Monitor: Abortion remains key issue for voters

Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan says the combustible issue of abortion has galvanized New Hampshire voters. The former governor and first-term senator who’s running this November for re-election says the June opinion by the conservative majority of the Supreme Court of the United States to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling and throw the battle over legalized abortion back to the states has “scared” men and women across the state.

“Absolutely this is top of mind for all my constituents,” Hassan said this week at a campaign event at Concord’s Equality Health Center, one of the state’s three abortion providers. Poll after poll in New Hampshire and across the country has indicated a surge in importance around the issue of abortion in the wake of the high court’s monumental ruling.

Hassan said she is focused on defeating a national abortion ban backed by some Republicans and stressed that “you can’t have a free, and fair and vibrant and thriving democracy when half of the population are second class citizens.”
-
With less than two weeks to go until New Hampshire’s Sept. 13 primary, Hassan used the gathering in Concord to blast her Republican challengers, arguing that the GOP candidates “have been competing to see who can be the most anti-choice.” “For years, there was a bipartisan history of defending reproductive rights in our state. This health center opened up just down the street from our State House. But the Republicans running against me would ignore the will of the majority of Granite Staters,” Hassan said.
Union Leader: Hassan launches strongest attack yet vs. GOP rivals on abortion

U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., came to Equality Health Center Wednesday, one of the state’s three abortion providers, to unleash the strongest attack yet against her Republican rivals on the issue. With Emily’s List President Laphonza Butler looking on, Hassan condemned the anti-abortion views of three leading GOP candidates: Senate President Chuck Morse of Salem, retired Brig. Gen. Don Bolduc of Stratham and former Londonderry Town Manager Kevin Smith.

“For years, there was a bipartisan history of defending reproductive rights in our state. This health center opened up just down the street from our State House. But the Republicans running against me would ignore the will of the majority of Granite Staters,” Hassan said. Hassan claimed the major GOP candidates “have been competing to see who can be the most anti-choice.” “So that’s what is at stake in my race, no matter who my opponent is. A woman’s right to be equal, an equal citizen in our Democracy, would be on the ballot and protecting women’s autonomy is a fight that I intend to win,” Hassan said.

Butler, of Emily’s List, said sending Hassan back to Washington for a second six-year term is a top priority to block Senate GOP designs on getting an abortion ban passed on Capitol Hill. “We have heard Senator Mitch McConnell talk about how the national ban is absolutely on the table in Washington if the Republicans were able to take over control of the Senate,” Butler said.

In separate appearances in Concord and Manchester this week, Democrats Sen. Maggie Hassan and Rep. Chris Pappas, both of whom are facing tight re-election battles this fall, said electing Democrats is the way to ensure that abortion rights and access to health care including contraception, STD and cancer screenings aren’t further eroded. Both raised the specter of a national abortion ban if Republicans gain control of Congress.

“No matter who my opponent is, a woman’s right to be a full and equal citizen in our democracy will be on the ballot,” Hassan said as she campaigned at the Equality Health Center in Concord Wednesday.
