FACT CHECK: Senator Hassan Voted to Add 600 More Agents at the Southern Border and Secured $8 Billion in Additional Border Security Funding

Wednesday, September 28, 2022

Mitch McConnell and his corporate special interest backers’ Super PAC launched another false TV ad against Senator Maggie Hassan, this time attacking her clear record of working to secure the southern border, including voting with Republicans to hire 600 more southern border agents and working with Republicans to secure $8 billion in additional border security funding.

Just yesterday, Senator Hassan released a new TV ad, “Safety,” featuring New Hampshire law enforcement officers applauding Senator Hassan’s long record of delivering resources to secure our borders and investing in public safety.

The McConnell-backed ad also falsely claims that the Inflation Reduction Act will raise taxes on middle class families. In reality, the law will not raise taxes on any family making less than $400,000. The Trump-appointed IRS Commissioner made clear that the additional funding to the IRS will be used to go after the largest corporations and wealthiest individuals who are evading taxes, not small businesses or everyday Americans. The funding to modernize the IRS will also help speed up the processing of tax returns.

“Anyone who knows Maggie Hassan’s record knows that she is working to secure the southern border and will block any effort to raise taxes on middle-class Americans,” said Maggie for NH spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “While the Republicans are resorting to desperate lies to try to boost Don Bolduc’s struggling campaign, Senator Hassan will continue to work to keep Granite Staters safe.”

Senator Hassan is Working Across the Aisle to Secure the Southern Border

The Inflation Reduction Act Will Not Raise Taxes on Middle Class Families or Add 87,000 IRS Employees

  • The Inflation Reduction Act does not increase taxes for those making under $400,000. Instead, the law will go after the largest corporations and wealthiest individuals who are evading taxes.

  • The investments to modernize the IRS will also help to address the tax return backlog and help ensure that Americans receive the tax refunds they are owed more quickly.

  • The Inflation Reduction Act does not add 87,000 new IRS staffers, rather it replaces departing employees and restores it to the size it was 10 years ago.

Senator Hassan is Cutting Taxes for Families and Small Businesses

  • Senator Hassan worked across the aisle to double the R&D tax credit for small business and startups, which is now law.

  • Senator Hassan worked with Republicans and Democrats to lower taxes for New Hampshire small businesses by extending the Employee Retention Tax Credit — and expanding it to support startups.

  • Senator Hassan passed bipartisan legislation to cut taxes for small businesses and for new businesses that opened during the pandemic.

  • Senator Hassan successfully worked to repeal taxes on the spouses of fallen service members, including the “Widow’s Tax” and the “Kiddie Tax,” saving those military families tens of thousands of dollars per year.

Senator Hassan is an Independent Leader for New Hampshire

  • Senator Hassan was named the most bipartisan Senator by the nonpartisan Lugar Center, and had a Republican cosponsor on all 48 bills she introduced last year.

  • Senator Hassan is one of the five Senators who voted most often against her own party according to CQ Roll Call.
